Beckenstein Fabric and Interiors
4 W. 20th St., nr. Fifth Ave.; 646-495-9628
With dozens of all-glass condo buildings joining New York’s skyline, curtains have never been more public. Better make them look nice. Whether it’s outfitting new walls or updating decades-old living-room dressings, Beckenstein Fabric and Interiors produces stunning, albeit premium-priced results. One of six experts (among them owner Garry Greenberg) consults with browsers on their first visit, deciding which of the store’s 100,000 fabrics stands out, what hardware complements it, and what design suits the space. The most popular styles right now, says Greenberg, are panels hung by grommets or thickly folded. After a thorough look-through, Beckenstein follows up with samples, sends someone to take measurements, and completes the installation to the customer’s specs. Fabrics run from $15 to $150 per yard, and it costs anywhere from $750 to $4,000 to bedeck a twelve-foot area. Depending on fabric availability, orders take no longer than three weeks.
