Roland Mouret

The Label
Since decamping from the London runway to New York a few seasons ago, sales and red carpet sightings have surged for Roland Mouret. The French-born, London-based designer credits his knowledge of the feminine psyche to his success: "I think a woman feels the thought and time I have lavished onto her when she slips on one of my dresses. She feels special,” he says. His sensual technique has seduced many a top tier A-lister, who regularly don his dresses to events and premieres. In addition to eveningwear, the label encompasses knitwear, accessories and custom couture, and Mouret also oversees the RM Rough raw diamond line and a cruise collection. Despite his growing popularity and business (which is co-owned by its Creative Director, Sharai Meyers) Mouret is bypassing the idea of too many pet projects in order to keep his focus on the brand—and his eyes on the ladies.
The Look
Fitted clothing with a traveled, cultured feel, made with a women’s body and sensuality in mind. Micro vs. macro, and lots of rich colors and textures mixed in with the grays and blacks. Past collections have ranged from candy-coated mod to pop with a touch of S&M.
The Designer
Every editor in town has fallen head over heels for Roland Mouret, a Frenchman who (okay) lives in London (“It lets me be more French,” he says gnomically.) Now in his forties, Mouret has had just about every job there is in fashion, from model and stylist to art director. The son of a butcher, the self-taught designer presented his first collection during London’s fashion week in 1998 (consisting of fifteen one-of-a-kind pieces, the line was made without patterns,) which led to his first magazine cover. Mouret has been named British Designer of the Year at the Elle Style Awards and was nominated for British Designer of the Year at the November 2004 British Fashion Awards.
