What are doctors’ secrets? What do they talk about when you and I aren’t around? To find out, New York invited five physicians—two cardiologists, a pulmonologist, an infectious-disease specialist, and an OB/GYN—to participate in an anonymous roundtable discussion (“What’s Up, Docs?”), and asked them questions that we, as patients, would want to know the answers to. What are the most common mistakes they make? Are there best and worst times to go to the hospital? And what on earth are they doing when we’re sitting in the waiting room for four hours? Their responses were illuminating, surprising, and in some cases unnerving. Perhaps the most important question is how to find a first-rate physician when you need one. Our tenth annual Best Doctors list—1,439 names in 61 specialties in all five boroughs and several surrounding counties—is a fine place to start.
