Not only embracing but embodying its East Village location, Mo Pitkin's invites diners in with its laid-back atmosphere; its constantly changing comedy, literary, and music performances in the upstairs lounge; and even its own original cuisine. Dubbing itself the first Judeo-Latino restaurant, Mo's combines the traditional ingredients and dishes of the neighborhood's two historical populations, Jewish and Hispanic, into a raucous, innovative new fusion. This attracts customers as diverse as the area's inhabitants. The semicircle booths are inviting to small groups, while the oak bar sits across from funky wall decorations by Steve Powers, the famed Coney Island signmaker. Mo's rotisserie kosher chicken is a typically inventive menu option, with garlicky, moist chicken and scallion cream cheese mashed potatoes on the side. Even desserts innovate, like the unique flourless chocolate cake . Even if not quite everything works, the vast majority of dishes combine the best of two very different cuisines at excellent prices.
Recommended Dishes
