Profile

Rochester-based menswear brand Hickey Freeman reaches out to a younger audience with this irreverent spin-off store. Instead of a jockey or gator, the symbol embroidered onto the breasts of polo shirts and inscribed in cuff links is the familiar counterculture image of the marijuana leaf. For a collection marked by the unruly teen’s drug of choice, the wares are beautifully made and surprisingly adult; while it’s more youthful than its parent brand, it isn’t meant for high-school jocks. Wool suits, dress shirts woven in Italian fabric, and plaid sport coats mimic the Freeman line, but are updated with form-fitting shirts; slimmer, tapered pants; distressed leather jackets; and rugby shirts. The space is both elegant and masculine: Striped cotton sweaters and thermal button-downs are stacked on a long wooden table amidst antlers and vases of orchids. A red tie dotted with the signature pot leaves hangs from the neck of an antique phrenology bust. The high points of the collection are items that bridge the gap between khaki casual and buttoned-up formal, like faded-navy linen blazers and $1,100 cotton suits.

Micro-Shopping Districts

The Alterna-Sohos

While the rest of the city scurries up and down Broadway, these three micro–shopping districts remain blissfully unpicked-over.
