Profile
Crazy quilts, intricate metal mesh jewelry, and antique oddities mingle at Metal and Thread, a collaboration between artists Denise Carbonell and Derek Dominy. The pair’s affinity for recycled materials is apparent throughout the well-curated one-room space; with its golden-colored walls, comfortable sitting area, and vibrant paintings, the place feels more like a living room than a store. Earrings created from recycled garbage bags and decoupaged coins are showcased on a shelf Dominy created out of salvaged scrap metal from the Lower East Side, and Carbonell’s paintings, made from squares of recycled linoleum, line the walls. Popular sellers are the affordable earrings and necklaces made of brass, freshwater pearls, steel mesh, and smoky quartz, as well as limited items from local artists, like hand-forged iron bowls and moleskin notebooks with laser etched covers.

The Alterna-Sohos
While the rest of the city scurries up and down Broadway, these three micro–shopping districts remain blissfully unpicked-over.
