Profile
This sharp spinoff of Design Within Reach delivers design-savvy tools for the kitchen, office, backyard, and beyond. Unlike its parent chain, this spacious store is free of furniture and futuristic light fixtures; instead, merchandise is displayed on meticulously arranged shelves and within glass-topped display cases. The minimalist space is decked with blond-wood floors, spare white walls, and stylish black domed lights overhead. The top level focuses on kitchen and office gear, and free-standing cases bear gleaming gadgetry like variously sized ice-cream scoops, $100 aluminum scissors, glass teacups, honey dispensers, linen pencil cases, letterpress note cards, mortar and pestle sets, corkscrews, garlic presses, and more. Larger storage and shelving units are housed on the lower level as well as wooden toys, gardening tools, croquet sets, Strida folding bikes, and random decorative accents. Outdoorsy types fawn over the collection of pocketknives, Thermoses, Swiss salt and pepper shakers, and snazzy-looking, easy-to-wash dishware and utensils for camping. The brand teams up with socially conscious designers on an assortment of items as well, like ecofriendly modular shelves made of forest-salvaged old-growth firs by Studio North Design.

The Alterna-Sohos
While the rest of the city scurries up and down Broadway, these three micro–shopping districts remain blissfully unpicked-over.
