The Weight of Water

Kathryn Bigelow films Anita Shreve's novel about a photographer (Catherine McCormack) investigating a mysterious nineteenth-century double murder while her marital difficulties rise to the surface during a boat trip with her husband (Sean Penn). Beautifully shot film interweaves period story with the present day, but can't make the conceit work, becoming progressively more confusing and repetitive. (1 hr. 45 mins.; R) — BILGE EBIRI
