Bright-eyed
Grindy (Katie MacNichol) gets her dream job working for a hotshot
fashion designer (Juan Hernandez), only to find herself in the midst
of an oil-and-water situation when their struggling company merges
with a shady, old-school jeans-maker. Breezy comedy is not the scathing
satire it wants to be, but Hernandez’s portrayal of a fey,
self-consumed brand-name is dead-on. Sure to appeal to the fashionista
set. Written and directed by Michele Maher; with Saundra Santiago

Spotlight: Actress Saundra Santiago
“I don’t know anything about the design world,”
admits Saundra Santiago, who plays Franca Fortuna, a naïf turned
fashionista, in Garmento. “I’ve been a fashion
victim, but that’s as far as it goes.” In writer-director
Michele Maher’s debut, a rags-to-riches story about a Studio
54–era designer-jeans company that, under Fortuna’s
ambitious eye, positions itself for an IPO, the Bronx-born Santiago
gets to act and dress out of character. “Oh, yeah, she’s
very in control—something few New York theater actresses ever
are,” says Santiago, who’s currently singing and dancing
on Broadway in Nine. “That’s why I love doing
indies—you never know who you’ll be. Besides, making
a film about New York in New York—what could be better?”
