Most dollar stores carry almost exactly the same merchandise. But Samurai (601 Eighth Ave., nr. 39th St.; 212-239-2688) stands out because most of its product is from Japan, and the packaging and graphics are so fun and seductive that it almost doesn’t matter what’s inside. And the store’s hidden location, on the second floor above a deli, makes it feel like a discovery. Unlike most 99-cent stores (where many things actually cost much more than 99 cents), almost everything—housewares, office products, gardening tools—is in the $1 to $3 range.
Insole, 99 cents
Hankie, $1.29
Lock, $1.49 each
Measuring Cup, $1.29
Note Binder, $1.49
Total = $10.52
