While Soho shopping can be a high-energy experience, the purposefully peaceful feng shui of the Vivienne Tam boutique should bring shoppers back into balance. The double happiness symbol up front bestows good wishes to all who enter, while the carved foo dogs, antique Chinese furnishings, and huge red dragon sculpture help welcome customers to the protected, home-like environment. Much of Tam’s designs incorporate balance as well: Jackets and tops are fitted but not constrained; patterned pants and skirts are textured without being ostentatious. The designer's Asian background has influenced every collection since she hit the scene in the 1980s and skyrocketed to global appeal. The only bad news is that sizes are cut rather small, so those with feminine curves will need to seek peace elsewhere.

The Alterna-Sohos
While the rest of the city scurries up and down Broadway, these three micro–shopping districts remain blissfully unpicked-over.
