Profile

Even though all the goods contained within are luxurious to the max, ABC Carpet & Home's six-floor Manhattan flagship retains a certain warehouse aesthetic: Worn hardwood floors creak under your feet, glittering chandeliers and gigantic antique carpets adorn the high ceilings, and furniture vignettes—often more piles than displays—stand everywhere. It's like an estate sale for your packrat dowager aunt, albeit with impeccable taste. It's easy to get your bearings by consulting the staff or the floor descriptions posted by the elevators, or, better yet, by calling the concierge and scheduling an appointment with a sales associate. You can flip through piles of rugs on six, relish the Ralph Lauren rooms on five, get lost in the European antiques and reproductions on four, fall in love with the bed-and-bath accessories and linens (400-plus thread count, for the most part) on three, and find yourself in a Mod pod of Modern Vintage on two. Mixed in with the tabletop miscellany on the soaring ground floor are unique jewelry, clothing (much with an Asian bent), intriguing eyeglasses, and other seasonal accessories. Across the street are three more floors of new carpets at one of ABC's satellite locations.

Extra

Carpets can be found across the street at 881 Broadway.

Key Departments

Electronics

Because today's modern home needs a television just as much as a table, and a stereo just as much as a settee, electronics outpost Harvey Home Entertainment, located on the upper mezzanine level, has what you need to complement your designer purchases. You'll find all the top brands and flat-screen TVs.

Registry

A cavernous space full of linens, furniture, and accessories, in which couples can pick and choose products from preset categories.

Simply put, they don't do what they say they will do when they say they will. They are not honest. They don't call you back. They are not helpful. It is a bunch of guys sitting around in chairs...Read More

I had a horrendous experience with the sales people in this dept, who seem dishonest, manipulative, and smarmy. Prices fluctuate depending on how badly they think they can exploit you. I recommend shopping elsewhere, I really do.

Micro-Shopping Districts

The Alterna-Sohos

While the rest of the city scurries up and down Broadway, these three micro–shopping districts remain blissfully unpicked-over.
