The Union Square Inn, located in the East Village, is a mecca for artists, writers, actors and musicians. Patterned after boutique inns and pensiones in England and Italy, the inn offers budget, but not “too budget” accommodations. In fact, the idea for the Union Square and its two sister hotels, the Amsterdam Inn and the Murray Hill Inn, was sparked by their owners’ own frustrations with the lack of mid-range hotels whenever they visited New York. The inn’s 47 rooms were renovated in 2003 and are simply furnished with basic amenities, including air conditioning, newly tiled private bathrooms and cable television. The size of the rooms is smaller than one might find in other cities, but they’re slightly above average for New York. Union Square, with its street performances, live music and open-air markets is only a few blocks west, and no less than 10 subway lines are within walking distance. — Andrew Wang

Competitively priced, clean and cozy, the inn is in one of New York’s most lively neighborhoods.

Cons
Its location can be a double-edged sword, particularly if you’re a light sleeper; this is, after all the city that never sleeps, and 14th St. is a perfect example.
