Opened in 1998, this classically “Chelsea” space (i.e. concrete floors and tall, white walls) houses both mid-career and emerging talent. Turner Prize winner Gillian Wearing is at GB+L, showing work that walks the line between art and documentary. For her renowned series “Signs…,” the artist took photos of people on the street holding placards on which they had written whatever they liked. Similarly, her video series “10-16” served as an unusual confessional outlet as adult actors lip-synched to interviews with children 10-16 years old. Then there’s the sculptor Jessica Stockholder, who directs the master’s program in sculpture at Yale: Her installations are deliberately clumsy and spiked with color, merging elegant geometries with found objects assembled in clusters as if by some packrat. As for the younger set, photographer Justine Kurland’s images of American nudist colonies double as pastorals. And the natural-history fantasies of painter Alexis Rockman can also be seen in his recent, massive mural for the Brooklyn Museum.
