For monumental sculpture with a twist, Luhring Augustine is the place to go. Janine Antoni (her earlier works were sculpted in chocolate and lard using her teeth) and Brit Rachel Whiteread (she won the Turner for casting the inside of an entire, dilapidated house in London in cement) also show here. The gallery is also great for video: Award-winning Canadians Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller reinstalled their "Paradise Institute" here, a miniature theater inside the gallery with special headsets that played sonic tricks on visitors. And Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist once furnished the entire gallery—elaborate carpets, sofas, kitchen table, bar, and all—hiding tiny video pieces throughout. To see the beginnings of the so-called "Yale School" of photography, look to Gregory Crewdson, whose moody (if somewhat over-produced) images of suburbia are largely inspired by Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Crewdson’s style may also seem strangely familiar due to his recent ad campaigns for HBO’s Six Feet Under and The Sopranos. — Alex Mar
