The Met in History: The museum's many additions and renovations
have left few traces of the original structure, a High Victorian
Gothic building designed to harmonize with its Central Park setting.
The Fifth Avenue façade and entrance dates from 1926, and the most
recent addition, the Lila Acheson Wallace Wing, was completed in
1987.
The Met Today: The Met's collections contain more than two
million works of art spanning 5,000 years of human history. It's
about the size of many small colleges, with seventeen curatorial
departments and a staff of 1,800 plus 900 volunteers. Last year,
5.2 million people visited the museum.
