Date: Built in 1913.
Architects: Charles J. Stumpf and Henry Langhoff Co.
Apollo Theater in History: Before being purchased by Sidney
Cohen in 1933, the venue was a burlesque theater that catered to
whites. Cohen renamed it the Apollo and made it a mecca for legendary
black performers such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie and other music
greats.
Apollo Theater Today: Struggling financially but preserved
as a landmark, the theater shut its doors in 1977 and reopened in
1984 after being bought in 1982 by Percy Sutton. Ownership was taken
over by the nonprofit Apollo Theater Foundation in 1991, and for
15 years the TV variety show It's Showtime at the Apollo
has recreated the theater's popular Amateur Night tradition.
