Empire State Building
Date: Built between 1929 and 1931.

Architects: Shreve, Lamb & Harmon.

The Empire State Building in History: The Midtown masterpiece enjoyed a significant 42-year run as the world's tallest building until the World Trade Center came along in the early 1970s. In 1945, a B-25 bomber crashed into the 79th floor, killing fourteen people and causing $1 million in damage.

The Empire State Building Today: What determines the color of the building's lighting? Everything from seasons and holidays to organizations that the city wishes to honor.See the building's web site for a calendar of upcoming colors.

Coolest trivia tidbit: The buildup of static electricity on top of the building is so intense that, under the right conditions, you can stick your hand through the fence on the observation deck and see St. Elmo's fire streaming from your fingertips!

Address: 350 Fifth Avenue, between 33rd and 34th Streets
