| Date: Built between 1972 and 1977.

World Trade Center in History: The concept for the WTC came
from Chase Manhattan Bank president David Rockefeller and got much-needed
political support from his brother Nelson, the Governor of New York
State at the time. Within a few years of its opening, in 1973, the
Twin Towers became an indelible figure of the city's landscape with
the opening of its observation deck, the opening of the Windows
on the World restaurant, and a part in the Jessica Lange remake
of King Kong.
World Trade Center Today: Destroyed
on September 11 when two commercial airliners were flown into
the towers. Real estate developer Larry Silverstein, who controls
the lease to the World Trade Center, has vowed to rebuild the complex
in some form.
Former Address: Church Street between Liberty and Vesey
Streets
