| Date: Built between 1871 and 1886.
Architect: Frederic Auguste Bartholdi sculpted Lady Liberty;
Gustave Eiffel engineered her construction.
Statue of Liberty in History: Originally built and displayed
in Paris, the statue was a gift from France to the United States,
in 1886, and has since been an icon of freedom and opportunity for
immigrants. The lines engraved at its base and written by New York
poet Emma Lazarus read:
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to
breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these,
the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden
door!"
Statue of Liberty Today: Appointed by Ronald Reagan to spearhead
the effort, then-Chrysler chair Lee Iacocca founded the Statue of
Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation to restore the landmark in 1986.
