Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Date: Built between 1956 and 1959.

Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Gugg in History: Though the Guggenheim is now one of Manhattan's archetypal buildings, Frank Lloyd Wright held a low opinion of New York City, believing that it suffered from overpopulation and architectural blandness. "I can think of several more desirable places in the world to build [Solomon Guggenheim's] great museum," he wrote in 1949.

The Gugg Today: The New York museum now has counterparts in four cities: Bilbao, Venice, Berlin, and Las Vegas, where two new branches opened in October.

Address: 105 Fifth Avenue at 89th Street
