Carnegie Hall

Date: Built between 1889 and 1891.

Architect: William B. Tuthill.

Carnegie Hall in History: When it opened, Carnegie Hall was known as "The Music Hall," in keeping with steel magnate Andrew Carnegie's brand of philanthropy, which was somewhat less egocentric than that of some of his peers. Tchaikovsky conducted the hall's first performance.

Carnegie Hall Today: Construction of the Judy and Arthur Zankel Hall is underway, in anticipation of a 2002 opening. Formerly a movie theater, this subterranean auditorium will accommodate both performances and educational events.

The Joke: How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Answer: Practice.

Address: 154 West 57th Street
