St. Patrick's Cathedral

Date: Built between 1853 and 1879.

Architects: James Renwick Jr. and William Rodrigue.

St. Pat's in History: The original St. Patrick's, now known as St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, still stands at Prince and Mott Streets. But the "new" seat of the Archbishop is the country's largest gothic Catholic cathedral, designed by the same man behind Grace Church and the Public Library.

St. Pat's Today: Still the city's most majestic and popular spiritual gathering place, the cathedral's powerful atmosphere was never more strongly in evidence than when Rudy Giuliani and George Pataki were moved to share an embrace during the recent memorial mass there following the World Trade Center attack.

Trivia Tidbits: The cathedral seats about 2,200 people. The Pieta is three times larger than the Pieta in St. Peter's, Rome. Archbishops are buried in a crypt under the alter. And, over 3 million people visit every year.

Address: 5th Avenue at 50th Street
