| Date: Built in 1906.
Architects: McKim, Mead, & White.
Morgan Library in History: When it was built, the Pierpont
Morgan Library cost approximately $1.2 million -- roughly the cost
of a nice two-bedroom apartment in some parts of the city today.
Morgan Library Today: In 1987, the library doubled in size
when it acquired the nearby Jack Morgan townhouse. A garden courtyard
was designed to connect the two buildings (a glassed-in cafe, located
in the courtyard, makes a great place for lunch). In a move that
proves the Library to be one of the more honorable institutions
in the U.S., the Morgan recently returned two sixteenth-century
manuscripts to their rightful home in Nuremberg, Germany, after
it was determined the works were stolen during World War II.
