    Uptempo sixties songs you haven’t heard before are the fare at Rififi’s free third-Saturday-of-the-month Subway Soul Club, where obsessive D.J.’s and a smallish packed dance floor add up to a rousing evening. When Felix Hernandez throws his monthly soulfests at the Roseland Ballroom (see classicsoul.com for details), a decked-out crowd of thousands comes for hits of the sixties through eighties punctuated by some catchy obscurities—and the occasional line dance. Book early; they always sell out.

Competition breeds the best. If only one pizzeria existed in New York, of course, there’d be no real winning slice. Thankfully, we’ll never know what that sorry situation tastes like, since pizza—like dance parties, dog runs, and fried chicken—has to evolve upward here.
