Rather than going
to an agency, many parents feel more comfortable hiring someone
who already knows their child—or at least a sitter who
comes highly recommended. You know the right people are out
there. But where?
>> Your Child's School. Teaching assistants and coaches
are a good bet, as are counselors at summer camp. They’re
likely to have an established rapport with your child, and
be able to stimulate and discipline her better than a stranger
would.
>> Local High Schools. Try calling the guidance-counseling
offices at local high schools to see if they maintain lists
of responsible teenagers looking for after-school work.
>> City Colleges. Most post job listings for their
students. If your child is interested in music, consider posting
an ad at Juilliard or the Manhattan School of Music. Arts-oriented
kids might enjoy spending time with undergrads from Parsons
or the School of Visual Arts.
>> International Organizations. There’s no
shortage in New York. If you’d like to expose your child
to a little global culture, try calling the French Consulate
for a referral. Or check out the classified sections in specialized
local newspapers like the Irish Echo or the Polish
Nowy Dziennik.
>> Places Of Worship. Priests, rabbis, and other
religious leaders have a good working knowledge of their communities,
and may be able to point you in the right direction.
